Sarpa Dosha is a karmic affliction in the birth chart linked to serpent energy, usually indicated through Rahu, Ketu and the serpent nakshatras.

Vedic tradition connects it to two things:

• Ancestral karma carried forward through the family line, where a serpent related obligation was never settled.

• Rahu or Ketu placed in the 1st, 5th, 7th or 8th house.

Sarpa Dosha, Kaal Sarp Dosh and Naga Dosha are not the same thing

Almost every website online treats these three as synonyms. They are not, and the confusion is exactly why people book the wrong ritual.

You can carry Sarpa Dosha without having Kaal Sarp Dosh. You can carry Kaal Sarp Dosh with no serpent karma at all. A puja aimed at the wrong one of these does nothing.

Signs that point to Sarpa Dosha

Look for a pattern, not a single symptom.

• Marriage proposals that reach the final stage and then collapse, again and again.
• Difficulty conceiving, or repeated miscarriage, with no clear medical cause.
• Skin conditions that resist treatment.
• Recurring dreams of snakes, especially before a setback.
• A career or business that starts well and then stalls without an obvious reason.
• Chronic illness that moves around the body and never gets diagnosed cleanly.
• A family history of the same obstacle repeating across generations.

A necessary caution. None of the above is a diagnosis. Every one of these has ordinary medical, financial and emotional explanations that should be ruled out first. A symptom list is a reason to have your chart read, not a reason to book a ritual.

Ashlesha Bali, the starting point

• Performed only when the Moon transits Ashlesha nakshatra, which is why the dates are fixed and limited.
• Suited to people who suspect sarpa dosha but have not confirmed its severity.
• Many families repeat it once a year as maintenance rather than as a cure.
• Its limit: it soothes. It does not settle a deep karmic account.

Sarpa Samskara, the full remedy

• The most complete of the three, and the one prescribed when the chart shows serious serpent karma.
• Involves sankalp, purification, kalasha sthapana, navagraha puja, sarpa puja and a homa.
• Usually spans two days and normally requires the beneficiary to be present in person.
• Who it is for: people who have already tried lighter remedies, or whose chart shows the dosha across multiple houses.

Naga Pratishta, the permanent one

• A serpent idol is consecrated and installed, creating continuous protection rather than a one time offering.
• Often chosen when the dosha runs through the family rather than one individual.
• Can be performed on its own or as a component of Sarpa Samskara.
• What it asks of you: an installed idol carries ongoing responsibility for its upkeep and worship.

Kukke Subramanya, or a puja performed at home?

How the right ritual is chosen from your kundli

1. Confirm the Rahu and Ketu axis. Establish the houses, the exact degrees, and which planets are hemmed.
2. Distinguish full from partial. If even one planet sits outside the Rahu and Ketu span, it is not a complete Kaal Sarp Dosh, and the remedy changes.
3. Check nakshatra involvement. Ashlesha and the serpent nakshatras carry the strongest sarpa signature.
4. Read the running dasha. A dosha that is dormant during one dasha and active during another needs different timing and a different scale of remedy.
5. Check the ancestral line. If the pattern repeats across generations, Naga Pratishta or a Pitra Dosh Nivaran Puja may be the true requirement rather than a sarpa ritual.
